August Newsletter is Full-Read about it.

Dear MCS Members,
Here we are getting ready for the August 1st meeting.  It will be outdoors at Laura Lein-Svencner's home.  Thank you, Laura.  Margi was able to arrange for a very accomplished artist, Barrie Mason, from out of state, to share her amazing knowledge with us.  Supplies and details are listed in the Meeting section.  Hope to see you there.

The MCS Archeological Imagination Exhibit at Bloomingdale Museum is a delight.  If you haven't seen it yet, please do so.  The art is so diverse and inspiring.  Just remember the hours are limited to Wednesdays 5-8pm; Thursdays and Saturdays 12-4pm.   The gallery is filled with light and it is a very pleasant experience to walk and/or sit among the beautiful artwork.

Adrienne Austin and Joan Lucht, Co-Chairs for exhibits did an excellent job however they did not have the participation they were expecting from our members.  An article from Huffington Post cited a recent New Zealand study which says that "engaging in creative activities contributes to an "upward spiral" of positive emotions, psychological well-being, and feelings of "flourishing" in life" What are you doing with your time these days?  Get on the "upward spiral" and create.

We have our wonderful retreat planned October 6-10.  This is an amazing opportunity to spend concentrated time creating in the presence of like-minded individuals.  No worries about meal preparation since all (11) meals are included along with 4 nights lodging for the amazing cost of only $270 if you register before August 31st. and $295 after.  Registrations are coming in rather slowly and it would be nice to know if we are going to make our minimum requirement numbers.  You don't have to wait until August 31st to register.  We would greatly appreciate receiving your registration as soon as you make your decision to attend.  The form and detailed information is attached.  Remember how disappointing it was last year when September came around and Covid did not allow for the retreat, don't miss the opportunity to participate this year.

Paraphrasing something I read recently:  They say money can't buy happiness...but it can pay for the retreat. And that's basically the same thing.

Take care,
Nancy Castner, President

MEETINGS

August 1:  9am - 2pm (bring your lunch)

All Day Workshop “Special Fabric Dyeing Workshop”  Barrie Mason, presenter

At the home of  Laura Lein-Svencner, 6718 Dale Rd. Darien IL 60561, 630-655-4492

Please park on the side of the street with no houses.

Parfait Dying is Barrie's favorite introduction to the wonders of dying fabric. In this workshop we will dye four squares of fabric in one container building up colors and amazing designs. For the designs we will be using various shibori and other resist techniques. For the color we will be using Procion MX dye that produces vibrant and fade resistant colors. Come see how fabric dying can add to your collage stash.

We will be outdoors and you will each have your private workspace.  Fabric and dye will be supplied for a $7 materials fee.  Advance registration needed.
Participants should bring:

· Plastic tablecloth for your work area.  A large trash bag cut open would work

· Folding chair & TV tray table

· Apron & gloves for dye work

· 1 gallon zip-lock bag + 4 quart zip-lock bags (for taking your work home)

·  paper towels

· A tall dye container that holds at least 3 1/2 cups of water.  I use a glass/plastic cylinder shaped vase found at a thrift store.  Tall and narrow is better than short and fat.

· Optional  – rubber bands, string, marbles, scissors, needle, strong thread (the instructor will bring some too).

Register for the Meeting by emailing Cherie Denton at cherayden@yahoo.com with the SUBJECT: MCS August 1 Meeting.  Let her know that you will bring the membership application and dues with you if you haven't paid MCS dues yet.

All participants must be paid members of the MCS. Application is attached.

MEMBERS

Cherylyn Gnadt has a solo show, In Light of Shadow, at the Gary Brown Art Gallery, Aurora.

August 5 - 28, 2021
In Light of Shadow is an optimistic reflection – exploring the idea that without light there is no

shadow, but also, darkness is splintered with the introduction of light. This collection of work

would not exist without the life challenges that become the muse, confidant, and teacher.
Opening Reception: Friday August 6 from 5 - 9pm & Saturday, August 7 from 1 to 5pm.
7 S. Broadway in Aurora IL. Free street parking and nearby parking garage. If you know the

area a bit, the gallery backs up to the Water Street Mall.

Laura has a three day workshop at Naperville Art League,
Embrace Design - August 13-15, (9:00am - 4:00pm)  $145.00
Immerse yourself into the understanding of design with collage. Fill your sketchbook with a lifetime of references. This three-day workshop is set up to help you see the elements separately and to help you bring it all together with the principles and create a comprehensive foundation for future collage artworks. New to art or need to freshen up on design this would be the workshop for you. There will be some altering of magazine papers and our final process will be learning the tacking down method of collage magazine papers on a watercolor substrate. This workshop is a wonderful start to any art form but geared for the fine art of Collage. Scroll down, on Naperville Art League’s class page

Please send Blessings, Prayers and Loving Thoughts to Nancy Staszak and her husband. Their home received major damage from the tornado in Woodridge. They lost many huge trees on their property; one went into the house and one crushed their car in the driveway. Their roof was replaced just this week and now they will be tackling the inside damage. She said the insurance company has been reacting in a very timely and effective manner.  The good news is that neither were physically hurt and they were able to stay in their home with a tarp as their roof. Nancy said they are doing well and will miss their beautiful trees. She is still planning to attend the MCS Retreat in October!
