Judging of Breaking the Ice-Congratulations to the Winners

Our current exhibit at the Woodridge library was judged by Sarah Feliciano; below are her comments and the ribbon winners.

I was very impressed with all the work, you have a wonderfully talented group and the judging was a bit difficult.  I picked pieces that spoke to me and showed creativity, took risks, and had a cohesive messaging.  Here are my picks.

1st-Dorothy Bury Shaw- These Great Heights

2nd-Nancy Staszak-Interplanetary II

3rd-Kathleen Schonauer-Pray for Peace

Honorable mention-Carolyn Dunn- Winter Landscape I

Close up of Mary Y. Piece.

Thank you to all the member that have shown their work in this exhibit, Great Job and to our Exhibit Chair Jocelyn Roy...Great organizing of the members and hanging.

All those who entered pieces in the exhibit must pick them up Saturday, December 29th by 11:00 a.m.

Definition of Collage for Exhibits
In its purest form, collage is the gluing of paper to another material.  Cut or torn pieces of paper are affixed to a base of paper, canvas or wood.  The composition may be figurative, abstract, simple or complex.  Collages may include found papers such as book pages, newspaper clippings, magazine photos, shipping labels or junk mail  They may also include other generally flat items such as cloth, metal, wire, mesh, photographs, leaves, or leather.  Most contemporary collage artists work with acrylic paints and mediums as they lend themselves to a layered approach and have the benefit of drying quickly.

Assemblage is the gathering together and assembling of a number of three dimensional objects into a composition.  Pieces may be freestanding or constructed inside a container such as a box, discarded drawer or shipping crate.  Work may be created using a single material such as wood or metal, or may bring together a large variety of objects like old toy and doll parts, household items, clothing jewelry and photographs.  Items are usually glued, soldered welded or wired together.

Mixed media refers to a work of art that was created using more than one art medium: an ink drawing combined with watercolor or a pencil drawing on top of an acrylic background.  It is used to describe work that combines multiple techniques and media: a stretched canvas covered with papers, paint, cloth, leaves and wired mesh, or a wood panel collaged with papers, texture with plaster or molding paste and then painted.  They may be more three-dimensional than a traditional collage.

CALL FOR ENTRY
The Tall Grass Gallery is looking for entries for its Pentimento exhibit January 18th to February 23rd.  Artists are invited to submit entries for this exhibit of images that involve the process of pentimento, of correcting or reworking the art in order to reach its conclusion.  Have you ever put a canvas away because painting on it was unsuccessful? Ever stored a painting facing the wall because you lost interest in what you were painting or decided you wanted to change something you already painted. Maybe you revisited a painting and painted over an image or an object because you weren't happy with your first attempt. Perhaps the second time around you altered the posture of your portrait subject, changed the viewpoint or perspective on the still life objects or removed a portion of the composition all together by painting over it? If you have experience with any one of these phenomena, you have created art through the process of pentimento. Submissions are due November 30th. Click on the link below for more information.

THE SISTERS PROJECT
From Margi: I still have not received photos of finished artwork from some people, however, the book is coming along. If I don't receive images for the book by December 1st, I will go ahead with what I have and complete the book. Please send me photos of your completed Sisters Project artwork as an attachment to your email with your artist statement for the Sisters Project book.  SEND TO:margihafer@yahoo.com
When you've finished the artwork you've created from Donna's art, please print her name, Donna Johnston and sign your name under her printed name. Your artist statement can say anything you want to about your experience with this project. It does not have to be more than a couple of sentences or a paragraph. I would like to include your artist statement along with your art in the book.
Since the exhibit isn't until next year, I do not need the actual pieces of artwork at this time. The exhibit at the Vogt Gallery will be the month of July 2019, and the reception will be Friday, July 12th 6:30-9p.m. I will be adding images to the Sisters Project Facebook page and create the Sisters Project Web Site which will start promotion of the exhibit in early 2019. Artists may choose to keep their finished pieces and donate to a charity of their choice in Donna's memory. These pieces may still be in the exhibit, even though they are not for sale.
Thank you to all of you who are taking part in this special effort to finish my sister's art and help support worthy charitable organizations with the sale of the finished art pieces.
If you have questions or concerns please call or email me at 815-370-3345.
