January 4th, 2015 Meeting

Midwest Collage Society Newsflash

Program: Art Critique
Who will be conducting the critique?  
Dorothea Bilder, Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University, her expertise is printing, painting and collage.


What should I bring if I want to participate?
Bring one to two pieces for critique.

How many pieces can I bring?
Expect at least one piece each to be considered for review. If time allows there may be time to critique a second piece depending on time and the number of members participating. 

Do I have to participate? 
No, this is optional. It should be fun, interesting and educational to hear feedback even if you decide not to participate. 

I don't know if I'm ready to be critiqued. 
This is a great opportunity to learn about your work and others in a friendly environment. This is a great opportunity don't pass it up.

February Meeting - Photograph Opportunity

Date:  February 1, 2015 will be an all-day work day but we will have photographer available in the morning.

Photographer: Ben Cooley who photographed our work for the Zhou B. Art Center show.  

Cost: 1st piece free. If someone would like more than one piece photographed there is a $10 charge to be  payable to Ben that day.

All members have the opportunity to have one piece of artwork photographed but the main purpose of this opportunity is to have a cd with new images to send out with proposals for new shows.  

There are no restrictions on size but due to limitations of lighting at the police station Ben requests no glass on the artwork.

Note: Please let Barb Boland know if you plan to take advantage of this opportunity and the number of pieces by January 15th so we have an idea of count for Ben.  barbidoodle@comcast.net

Retreat 2015

2015 Annual Retreat for 5 days in Camp Mack Indiana.  
Space will be limited to 22 people. 
Dates: Wednesday, Sept 23 2015 to Sunday Sept 27, 2015. Price: $225 includes lodging and meals.

When: January 12, 13, or 14 from 10am to 4 pm (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday):10am to 4 pm 
Please be sure that all artwork is marked with your name on back and that the piece is properly wired.

Jerri Reimann had 4 pieces accepted into the Whimsy Encore show at Norris Gallery in St Charles. 

Show runs Saturday, January 20 thru Saturday, February 28.

Reception on Sunday, February 8 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Normal gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Highlights from our MCS Holiday meeting..

Our hostess Barb, Mary Beth, and Jeanne presented us all with wonderful holiday display and with the society's help we were able to enjoy the gathering of Collage and mixed media artists all afternoon.
 A few things on the board thought to take a photo of this as a reminder but I'm sure it will be out in the Newsletter shortly.  Members new...

Plexi Glass House on Exhibit at Vogt Gallery

The Plexiglass Houses are now at the Vogt Gallery, 17429 67th Street in Tinley Park, Illinois. (708-617-6503)
The reception for the "Doll House Exhibit is December 6th 10 a.m.-4 p.m.  There will be many doll houses on exhibit, as well as our plexiglass houses. The exhibit runs through the end of January.


Sylvia Koch injured big toe and it became infected. The infection spread to the bone and she has been on daily antibiotics, administered at the hospital. She was recently moved from Silver Cross Hospital to a rehab center in Orland Park. Alden Estates, 16450 S. 97th Ave. She's in room 229, Bed 1. Her phone number there is 708-873-3918. She will be there at least 2 weeks.

If you plan on planning on going to the Vogt Gallery, the Alden Estates is not too far from there, if you'd like to visit Sylvia.

End of Year Event: General December Meeting & Holiday Party

When: December 7th

Time: 12:30 to 3:00
There will be food, music and games and an optional gift exchange.

Things You Should Know:

- Everyone please bring food to share - We need to get an idea what everyone is bringing. Also, indicate if you are bringing a hot dish. Please let Barb Arntzen at  jarntz@wideopenwest.com what you are bringing.

- Optional Activity - Bring a wrapped handmade gift to exchange - please put a note in the gift before you wrap it so that the person receiving it knows who made it. 

Note! There will not be a swap table for this meeting to make room for goodies.

30th National Juried Exhibit- National Collage Society

Laura Lein-Svencner just received this information and would like to share...She's now a Signature member along with Margi Hefer they both received their membership and a pin this year.  Laura received a Steven Specht book award and Monetary Award.  see more at the National Collage Society website.   Information will be posted soon.

November News

Our General November meeting will be held on Sunday November 9th.  – Some our  members will be having a show and reception on November 2nd at the Marmion Scholl Mezzanine Gallery, in Aurora. Please support them by attending (see Member New Section below)

General Meeting (November 9th) Details:

1:00 - announcements and a presentation by Lezlie Lenz on the new Gelli Printing.

What to Bring: An apron and table protection, any papers you want to print plus any stencils or items to print texture. Bring a ball point pen. $5.00 studio fee applies
 
Goodies:  PLUS the Crescent Board sample goodie bags from Lynn Tsan's October presentation arrived and will be available!

Nancy Staszak
Nancy Staszak won an honorable mention at the Senior Artists' Network show "Later Impressions". Her work "Things Seen and Unseen" will be at the Renaissance Court Gallery of the Chicago Cultural Center through November 30th.

Nancy also has a two woman show with Pat Lagger at Congregation Beth Shalom in Naperville.  
The reception will be at about 9:00PM after the 8:00PM service Friday, November 21stThe show will be up through the end of November.

Turkan Ilkdemirci and Eve Ozer
MCS members Turkan Ilkdemirci and Eve Ozer will be exhibiting at 4Art Inc Gallery in November.

A terrific exhibit of themed plexiglass houses made by 10 members of the Midwest Collage Society went up today at the Palos Park Library and will be up through Thanksgiving Day. It truly is a creative collection of assemblages. The directions to the library and the hours can be found on their website, palosparklibrary.org.

Call to Artists - Opportunity 

Art for a Good Cause!
Calling all Artists who would like to contribute art to help support The Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, serving  Kane, Kendall, DuPage, Will and DeKalb counties.  Help Us Pack the Pantry by donating a creative work of art. We are looking for Artists to create a 2-D or 3D piece of art, using bags as a material source but not limited to a bag. Think out of the bag.

Art Requirements:
Donate a 2-D or 3D piece of art pieces along with a requested $5.00 donation to help supply food for those in need in our communities and combat hunger. 
All pieces must be gallery ready to hang or display.  Title, medium, Artist name and value are required.  Please put a value down for reference.
Pieces are due to If These Walls Could Talk by November 30, 2014.

December 5, 2014 - reception and silent auction, all pieces will start at $25.00.  If you wish your piece to start higher please indicate. Reason for the $25.00 starting bid - $25.00 can purchase approximately 100 lbs. of meat or 100 boxes of cereal.  $25.00 can give a lot.
