August 5th   9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Denise Laurin Donatelle, artist and instructor at Waubansee Community College will present a workshop on hand-made Japanese paper scrolls.
In the morning participants will have time to create an original 7.5” x 4.5” work of art using stamps, images, paper, a drawing, or Chinese ink painting techniques, (ink techniques will be demonstrated). This art should be lightweight paper under 80lb. Bring any materials you need to create the artwork. Prior to the workshop, you can make sketches. We will have about 1.5 hours to work up the design of the artwork. You have complete artistic control over what you would like to do! This art piece is the image around which the 16" scroll proportions are based. In the afternoon the Japanese scroll (kakemono) will be created using traditional scroll-making techniques. Denise will demonstrate Chinese or Japanese ink painting techniques which may be added to the scroll. Denise will provide proper adhesive, Washi paper (all other papers will be glued to this paper), wooden dowels and informative step-by-step hand-outs.

See photo of sample scroll attached.
Materials List:
Participants should bring thin ribbon for hanging the scroll, a variety of four-six different colored and/or patterned papers. JUDGING: (one 1st place, two 2nd place, three 3rd place, four honorable mentions)

1st Place (artist) Karen Sako
Title: Remembrance
Comments: A striking piece from afar that depicts light versus darkness.  Upon looking closer the haunting colors have many hidden moments that are inspired by the texture of the paper and the strokes of color

2nd Place (artist)Judy Koessel
Title: Paper Rain/Alchemy
Comments:  Through the texture of the paper and the streams of cool color, this piece sparkles and shines with alluring movement.

2nd Place (artist) Nancy Savaiano Rosenberg
Title: Male Figure
Comments: Vivid colors that represent and capture the essence of a man.  The colors are layered on boldly with texture but show warmth and coolness.

3rd Place (artist) Joan Lucht
Title:  Resistance
Comments:  From the pattern of square (inside and out), the strings tightly hung, circles dancing across and splashes of vibrant colors, this piece is rich with movement.  It is aptly titled.

3rd Place (artist) Chris Jacobsen
Title: Serenity
Comments: This piece invokes serenity; the deep cool colors, the images of nature and a sense of music in the air.  The pieces are elegantly placed to convey that emotion.

3rd Place (artist) Mara Krumins
Title:  Forgotten Stories
Comments: This piece contains intriguing pieces of textured and printed paper that entices the view to look deep inside.

Honorable Mention (artist) Rachelle Barmann
Title: The Journey
Comments:  Vibrant colored panels with textured and squares that take the eye through a journey of brightness and darkness.

Honorable Mention (artist) Nancy Castner
Title: Inspire
Comments: Invokes a feeling of folk art through colors, paper and design.  This piece makes you smaile.

Honorable Mention (artist) Mary Warner
Title: Pieces
Comments: A modern piece.  The selection and placement of the pieces bring great movement.

Honorable Mention (artist) Cherylyn Gnadt
Title: Of the Same
Comments: From the lightness of the girls, back to back, to the deep colors and textures of the roots this is a beautiful representation of sisterhood.

Overall Comments on Exhibit:  This is an alluring show by the Midwest Collage Society.  Through the medium of collage the members have shown many different and skillful techniques to showcase the theme of Bits and Pieces.

As there were so many diverse pieces, it was hard to award only nine artists.  It took a lot of time and viewing pieces more then once.

Congratulations to the winners.  It was a pleasure and honor to view all of the art work.  Thank you!

MCS EXHIBITS
We hung the Bits & Pieces show successfully and all the labels are up.
The show opened Mary 19th.   Gallery hours are Wednesday thru Sunday 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM except for holiday weekends and will be open during all performances and events at The Norris and East High School.
If there is construction, the alternate entrance is to the left of the main front and around the corner just a few feet. It is DOOR 45 and it has four stairs and it enters into the large gallery that has the showcase.  If anyone comes after the front is officially closed, there will be a sign indicating the entrance is DOOR 45.  At that time, there will also be a sign telling anyone that is unable to do those four (4) stairs at Door 45, what to do.  That would also include those using a walker or wheelchair.  There will be another door that those individuals will be able to enter and more specifics will come later.

Our judge, Susan Bartlett, a collage artist with the Nature Artists' Guild, has returned from her trip to Colorado and will visit the show twice before judging it.  Those awards will be announced as soon as we know and the ribbons will be put up for visitors to see during the course of the show.

The Bits & Pieces Reception is June 30, 1:30 to 3:30 at the Norris Cultural Center for the Arts at 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles, IL
Artists should plan to bring wrappings with them to pick up their art work right after the reception.  Please have a friend pick up for you if you cannot come to the reception!
