MCS HOLIDAY PARTY

Everyone is welcome to participate in a gift exchange at the MCS Holiday Party. Bring something you have made, something artistic you have purchased, or art materials that you think  a fellow collage artist would like to use. All gifts should be wrapped, and a note may be included. All participants in the exchange will draw a number, and receive a gift with that number on it.

PLEASE! - We need a volunteer to help hang the exhibit on February 1.
Don't forget to finish your assemblages from our workshop with Donna Castellanos. Donna will exhibit one of hers to show our inspiration.
In keeping with the theme, create a hanging piece using an old book or books. These could also be in the style of Donna's. Several old Time-Life books will be available at the party for those who wish to have one. If you don't have time to create you may exhibit an altered book from a past exhibit. 
A prospectus will be available at the party on December 1 and in the January Newsflash. These will be due on January 15th.

Please consider donating a creative work of art to help support the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, which serves Kane, Kendall, DuPage, Will and DeKalb counties. Drop off at the gallery (address below) by December 4.
All pieces will start at $25.00. If you wish your piece to start higher please indicate.
($25.00 can purchase approximately 100 lbs. of meat or 100 boxes of cereal.)

Tall Grass exhibit SYMMETRY

Andrea Fox is curating this exhibit and would like to see fellow MCS artists participate. Look to see if your work incorporates symmetry within the work suggesting a harmony and balance to the art. This is a juried show.

Lynne Kornecki is publisher of a new website to promote artists and their exhibits. She interviewed Tania Blanco during a tour of Tania’s studio, took photos and wrote a lovely article. She is interested in meeting and promoting other artists in the western suburbs. Please feel free to contact her.

Guided meditation, reflection and writing exercises form the basis of the day's personal insights.

What you will need for the Mini Core Book:
  • Pick a theme - Suggestions: Beach, Birthday, Christmas, Family, Nature, Vacation
  • Decide if you want your book to have 4 or 5 cores. Cut 4 or 5 coordinating decorative papers 4" X 6"
  • Coordinating cardstock for 4 or 5 tag inserts
  • Papers for making mini envelopes, corner pockets, etc.(use odds and ends of decorative papers)
  • Embellishments to fit your theme: charms, brads, buttons, ribbons, quotes, mini photos, stickers, flowers, collage materials
  • Glue, glue brush, exacto knife, cutting pad, small scissors, ruler
NOTE: Adrienne will provide cores and will bind the books.

Nancy Staszak will be showing a retrospective of her work at Knox College in Galesburg the first weekend of November at their Whitcomb Art Center. It will include her collages, water colors, etchings, Dinosaurs and the works! 

Nancy Staszak and Eva Holy will have work in the Nature Artists' Guild show at the Morton Arboretum on November 8 and 9. Reception will be held on Friday evening, November 7. For more information:

MEETINGS October 6th noon-2:30 pm



Collaging with Skins - Creating Dimensional Work -  Maureen Gasek, presenter
Participants will explore and learn how to work on different acrylic grounds and create skins from mediums to build up a 3-D piece of work.  Be ready to explore dimension with paint.
Participants should bring acrylic paint, brushes, water containers. Paper towels etc to be ready to paint.  Everyone should bring a pair of scissors, an exacto blade, palette knife and a flexible cutting board if they have one.  If you have different mediums bring the heavier/thicker ones that will hold a shape. Also bring a plastic table cloth to protect the table.
Maureen will provide sample boards of grounds to work on, mediums, some paint and some pre-made skins to play with on you board.

MCS RETREAT
Wow...what a great retreat! Kudos to all the artists for sharing some new techniques. We tried texture paste and gelli printing, made Soul Collage cards and ATC cards. What fun to have two pop-up demonstrations using artist embossing powder and a mouth atomizer.  And we were challenged with a brown bag collage. For all who didn't attend this year...take heart, we will do it again next year, so save these dates - September 23rd - 27th, 2020.  Until then Donna, Patty, Joan, Adrienne, Tania and Margi say, "May the Forest be With You!"

We will be able to display assemblages from our workshop with Donna Castellanos in two of the library's display cases, so finish your masterpieces! In keeping with the theme, create a hanging piece using an old book or books. 17 old Time-Life books will be available at the October meeting for those who wish to have one. Depending on size we should be able to hang 30 to 40. Donna will be invited to display a piece along with ours. St Thomas the Apostle Church Celebration of the Arts

This year, the event will be held Saturday, November 9th from 10-6
and Sunday, November 10th from 9-1 and will take place in the church gymnasium.

MEMBERS
Nancy Staszak will have work in the Woodridge Community Art Show at the Woodridge Public Library. The reception is this Friday October 4th from 6:00 to 8:00PM.
Nancy also has work at Indian Prairie Library in a group show, and work at the Mayslake Peabody Mansion.  Mayslake is celebrating its historic past by transforming the halls with rustic agricultural antiques. The art work is based on its past as a working farm. Nancy also has her herd of dinosaurs at the SciTech Children’s Museum in Aurora. The dinosaurs will come down the end of the month and travel to Knox College for a 50th year reunion !

Cherylyn Gnadt won third prize in the Elmhurst Artists' Guild Fall Member Show for her multiprocess ink monoprint "In Between" 

Joan Lucht has a solo show at the Downers Grove Library in the cafe during October. She will have a display of materials and be present to answer questions at the library on October 30, 7-9pm.

Andrea Fox and Margi Hafer have artworks in “The Art of Illinois - 2019” 

Tania Blanco has one painting juried into The Art of Illinois:2019 show at Gallery Seven in Lockport. Opening reception is Saturday,October 5, 2019. 6-8 pm

New Interim Exhibit CoChairs
Jocelyne Roy has found it necessary to resign her position as Exhibit Chair due to her extremely busy schedule.  A hearty THANK YOU you to Jocelyne for having taken on the MCS Exhibit Chair and providing continuity since Nancy Staszak's last term.  

Adrienne Austin and Joan Lucht have volunteered to serve as interim Co Chairs for this position until next year's election.  Please offer your support as they continue to establish additional exhibit opportunities for the MCS membership.  We all make art and these exhibits are an opportunity to display and offer it for purchase.  Whatever will we do with it all otherwise?  They also provide deadlines to complete projects, something many of us find necessary!
