3. NO JANUARY MEETING

1. Our annual December "Eat, Gab and Grab" meeting is this Sunday, December 4,
from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien.Members are asked to bring a dish to share on our buffet tables, so please contact our Hospitality Coordinator Barb Arntzen and let her know what you are bringing. That will help her crew to plan how much serving space is needed and will help balance the menu.

We will also have a grab bag of small handmade art and/or gifts, so if you'd like to participate, bring a wrapped gift along. This is always a wonderful time of exchanging our handmade items.

2. MCS SURVEY
Since January weather is so unpredictable, we normally do not have a January meeting and currently do not have one planned for January 2012. But there may still be time to put one together if you really want one. If we DO plan one, it would probably have to be on January 8 or 15 rather than the first Sunday of the month. CALL FOR WORKS: DEADLINE FEBRUARY 15, 2012. PLEASE REPOST

The modern use of collage techniques is consider to have begin in 1912 with works by Pablo Picasso (such as shown). Constructive art as been growing ever since. To celebrate this 100 year anniversary the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction (collagemuseum.com) would like to invite you to contribute one or more modest sized hand-made collages, assemblages, box assemblages or constructions* representative of your working style for a large (hopefully overwhelming) exhibition that will be held in 2012. A catalog of the exhibition will be created and made available to contributors at actual cost. A PDF version of the catalog will be available to contributors for free.

No Fees, No jury, all works accepted and exhibited, none returned. Your contribution will become an important part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
What is needed.
Please send one or more collages, assemblages, box assemblages or constructions of modest size (you decide what is ‘modest’) that is ready to hang on a wall or exhibit on a pedestal or shelf. Works on paper should be framed if possible or, at a minimum, send in a clear resealable polypropylene bag. Unframed works will be hung together like an installation.

November 2 -- TheMidwest Collage Society hopes to stuff a lot of stockings with original artthis holiday season.

Their show, “PeaceWorks,” will feature a wall of original 8-by-8-inch artwork at a flat price of$65 each. “Our idea is to make fine artaccessible and affordable at a time when people can’t spend a lot on gifts anddécor,” says Jerri Reimann, President of the MCS. The exhibit will include two galleries fullof larger artwork created on paper, canvas, wood or found objects.

The show will also offerartist-created gift items like handmade books, ornaments, jewelry andcards. “This is not a craft show,”Reimann explains. “Each piece is anoriginal piece of art, so you can be sure your gift will not beduplicated!”

Collage is a fineart medium that will celebrate its 100 year anniversary in 2012. Collage, assemblage and mixed media artworkis composed through the layering and adhering of materials to create bothabstract and realistic images. Artistsutilize an endless supply of manipulated papers, including maps, book pages,sheet music, old letters and photos. They further embellish their work with images, stamps, paint andthree-dimensional materials. Inspirationcan come from nature, color, humanity or society.

Twenty-four artistsfrom the Midwest Collage Society will be represented at “Peace Works.” The MCS was founded in 2003 to promotecollage as a fine art. Its members,mostly from the Chicagoland area, meet monthly to share techniques andmarketing skills and to plan exhibits.

The Bloomingdale Park District Museum is located at 108 S. Bloomingdale Road in Bloomingdale, and is open Wednesdaysfrom 4-8PM, Thursdays and Fridays from 10AM-4PM and Saturdays from noon-4PM. An artists’ reception will be held Sunday,November 13, from 2-4PMand is free to the public.

This workshop was set up to introduce a bit more paint in the collage process.. and some many of my student are willing souls to experiment further with the paints I decided to work in the acrylic abstract paint and using up the collage scraps we have so many of. They all were troupers enjoying the process as they went along.

Studio fee of $5 will apply, and a supply list will be sent out prior to the meeting. Also bring items for the swap table - we will have a wealth of items good for assemblages and collage. And please remember that if you bring something and it is not taken, that you are responsible for picking it up or disposing of it at the end of the meeting.

Paper and ribbon will be supplied by instructor.

Members should bring scissors, sharp pencil, ruler, bone folder, good glue stick and/or pva glue, and if you have one, a round pointed jewelry pliers.
I also suggest people bringing plastic to protect the work area, wax or scratch paper to glue on, toothpicks or thin skewer sticks for placing glue, a brush and small can for water if bringing PVA glue..

Hard to believe it's the end of August already... where did summer go? Well, I guess it's still here since it's another 90-degree day with thunderstorms possible tonight! Ah, Chicago weather...

Lots of interesting info for you this week. Please read carefully for all the details.

1. September Museum Field Trip
Instead of a group meeting in September, we will be taking a field trip to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago on Saturday, September 10. Two current exhibits there are of special interest: the Pandora's Box exhibit of Joseph Cornell assemblages and the work of artist Mark Bradford. See the photos on our blog or the museum web site for more info on these exhibits, but people are raving about them both!

If you are interested in going, you'll need to contact other MCS members to arrange car pools. You were sent the current list of members in a previous e-mail, and that should assist you in finding members from your geographic area. If you want to go and are having trouble connecting with other members, drop me an e-mail and I'll try to help. Although we won't have a formal gathering place at the museum, it's likely our groups will run into each other, and perhaps members will want to lunch together. We're suggesting that groups might want to go early in the day, but that is completely up to you and your carpool group. Listed below is more info on the museum hours and parking.

4. Bloomingdale Exhibit "One Size/One Price" Wall
The members have spoken, and for this portion of the exhibit, we will create art in the size of 8x8" that will be priced at $65. We suggest that you work on a wrapped canvas (any depth) or a wood panel so no framing is necessary. For this ONE WALL at the exhibit, all pieces must have the outside dimensions of 8x8" and all pieces will be priced at $65. Proper hanging hardware must be attached. These pieces will be hung salon style on one wall of the gallery. If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

5. Bloomingdale Exhibit General Information
The theme for this exhibit is "Peace Works" and it will run from November 12 thru December 16, with the reception on Sunday, November 13, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Each artist will be allowed to enter several pieces in addition to the one size/one price pieces. We will also have a bin for flat work that is matted and bagged, as well as a table for a number of gift-type items. Final details about pre-registration and number of pieces will follow very soon.

6. Upcoming Class at LaGrange Art League

Mixed Media Magic: Come prepared to experiment! Combine acrylic paint, gel mediums and dry medium along with altered papers and image transfers to create line, texture, and depth in your work. This class will help you approach your art-making from a different perspective. Composition as well as techniques will be covered. Students will be encouraged to convey individual expression through their work.

1. Norris Gallery pick up this Saturday
Remember to pick up your work from the Norris Gallery this Saturday, July 30, between 9:30 and 11:00 AM. Please arrange for another member to get your work if you are unable to pick it up yourself.

2. August General Meeting
The August meeting will be an all-day work day on Sunday, August 7, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien. Bring a project you're working on, a bag lunch and beverage, and any items or techniques you'd like to share with other members!

3. September Field Trip
In lieu of a meeting in September, we'll be organizing a gallery field trip featuring a visit to 4ArtInc in Chicago. You may remember curator Robin Rios from our January panel discussion. This field trip will be held on a Saturday rather than our regular Sunday meeting time. Details will be furnished soon.

4. MCS Retreat

Laura Lein-Svencner is teaching a one-day collage workshop especially for MCS members who are not able to attend the retreat! It will be held on Sunday, October 23, from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Darien Municipal Center. Cost is $35 for members ($55 for non-members). A sign-up sheet will be available at the August meeting, and flyers will be posted/e-mailed soon.

6. Maureen Gasek Workshops
Six of us recently had the opportunity to attend a one-day workshop on acrylic techniques with Maureen Gasek. We explored pours, skins, the use of flow aid, and creating on raw canvas. It was a wonderful day, and we all left with pieces we'd created as well as tons of ideas. Maureen hosts workshops for 6-8 participants in her studio in Aurora by request, so if you and some friends would like to continue to explore acrylic techniques, contact her at maureen@epsilondesign.net or call 630-898-3859.

7. Looking Forward
The October 2 meeting features holiday paper arts projects led by Mary Warner, and the November 6 meeting features batik led by Ann Hupke. More details soon!

8. Bloomingdale Holiday Show
Our next group exhibit will be at the Bloomingdale Museum, November 12 - December 16, 2011. Theme is Peace Works. More details to come, but this exhibit will include a table of holiday gift type items and one wall of same size, same price work. We want to encourage people to purchase original art as holiday gifts!

June's meeting with Maureen Gasek

Hi everyone, it was a wonderful meeting today with the MCS members and our presenter Maureen Gasek, She stretched our limits with the acrylic and feed our need for more texture and medium applications which we will combine with collage. Do take a moment and look at her work, she is a very active artist working all over the area giving demo's, workshop and live painting presentations along with art shows and galleries.

While we were at our meeting everyone was interested in a little salad/dip that I brought and I thought I would share that too.

Antioxidant salad
1 1/2 c. roasted corn kernals- by frozen
1 c. black beans rinsed and drained
1/2 c red bell pepper, diced
1/2 c. red onions-diced
1 ripe mango cut into small pieces
1/2 c. cilantro-chopped fresh or dryed will work
1/4 tsp. cumin
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. canola oil /I used olive oil
1 small chipolte pepper- opional
3 tablespoons, lime juice

Saute the frozen corn in the olive oil, till some of the corn is browned. Mixed together in large bowl and enjoy with corn tortilla chips or as a side dish on fish and chicken.

2. "ELEMENTS" RECEPTION, FRIDAY, JUNE 24
The reception for the "Elements" exhibit at the Norris Gallery in St. Charles will be held Friday, June 24, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. An electronic invitation will be sent to you soon, and postcards should be available in the next few weeks.   We need to furnish the refreshments for the reception. If you are willing to bring something, or to help set up/clean up, please contact Barb Arntzen at jarntz@wideopenwest.com so she can coordinate.

Call for Entries

For anybody who wants to contribute to the book with their own statement on the importance of art, or where art is hiding that the normal non-artist doesn’t see, or statistics about how much money is spent in any art-related field, whatever you want really, that cites the importance and everywhere-ness of the art we live and breath, now’s your chance to voice your love of art!

YOU don’t even have to be an artist, maybe you just know one (married one, birthed one or just appreciate their hard work, etc) And the statement can be about any kind of art as well: theater, dance, music, visual, the written word, movies, you name it, just:

• write down/doodle/illustrate/digitally design the sentiment / fact / statistic
• in a 9”x7” LANDSCAPE format
• in whatever medium you’d like• mail it (to 4041 Powelton Ave, Apt A1, Philadelphia, PA 19104) or scan it to me sized at atleast 300dpi, or email at artisticrebuttal@yahoo.com
• include your name, state and profession/website with your statement

After I collect all those who want to participate, I will make a book out of them using Lulu.com.

The drawing could take you 5 minutes or 5 days, I don’t care, it’s mostly the statements that I’m focusing in on. But most of us being artistically-swayed, a little flare would be appreciated.

March 12th is the deadline for folks who would like to have their statement/image in an abridged version of the book that I am going to take to Arts Advocacy Day with me, which will be left with my PA representatives, so its mainly for PA artists/art appreciators, but all are welcome.

1. DOWNERS GROVE LIBRARY EXHIBIT PRE-REGISTRATION DUE BY MARCH 26

Don't forget to send in your pre-registration info and check for the DGPL exhibit "Construction/Deconstruction." Registration forms are due by Saturday, March 26. Remember, no money may be turned in at the library!

2. APRIL MEETING, SUNDAY, APRIL 3, FROM 1:30-4:00 PM

April's meeting will feature Mike Bessler on Photographing Your Artwork (normal $5 studio fee applies)

This demo will be interactive. So if you own them, please bring your camera and any portable lighting you have, like flashes (Mike will have some lighting available to use). Also bring a piece of art you want to photograph/copy. Mike will go through the steps to get a good a copy of your work based on your equipment. He should have time to show you settings on your camera. Last time he presented this, some of the participants ended up with photos that were good enough they could be used to make copies of the artwork.

Some background on the presenter: Mike Bessler’s passion is to create enhanced photographs on canvas that will capture the awe of nature. He particularly enjoys creating and printing large images that combine his artistic vision with his technical expertise. Mike's work has been shown at the Oakbrook Fine Art Invitational (where he received a first place award), and can also be seen in galleries and lobbies throughout the Chicagoland area

. His work has been sold nationwide to both private consumers and corporations. He enjoys sharing his passion with others as he teaches photography workshops at Starved Rock State Park each year. You can see some of his images at www.BesPhoto.com.

3. IT'S MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME!

April 1 begins our new fiscal year, and that means it's time to renew your membership. A renewal form will be e-mailed to you separately in case you didn't get one at our March meeting. NOTE: We are planning to distribute our new handbooks at the April meeting for all those who have recently renewed.

4. COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IDEAS WANTED

At our March meeting, we briefly discussed what our members desire from the organization, and overwhelmingly, people expressed the desire for more group exhibit opportunities. Members were also eager to create another collaborative project (like the Exquisite Corpse and Altered Purses collaboratives we've done in the past). If you have any ideas for group projects, please e-mail them to me. I've already received a couple of very good ideas, but we'd like more to consider. Think up! The board will use these ideas to brainstorm, so don't hesitate to share any ideas you have.

Photographing your own art.

Copy Your own art
near sunset on concrete (sidewalk or better yet driveway),
the sun should not be coming thru the trees
no sun on the artwork, that’s why near sunset
let camera do the white balance, so use auto white balance
camera, see below
between noon and 4pm inside in a south facing room with good window lighting
the sun cannot hit the artwork
in a bedroom, put the art next to the bed on the side away from the window
use a room with neutral colored walls, white, grey, black, not beige
camera, see below
use your flash off camera to one side, pretty far away
set your camera to flash white balance, you’d think it would do it automatically...

use a “reveal” or “blue” type light bulb, pretty far away
probably auto white balance won’t work, so you’ll have to experiment with your camera

unfortunately, you’ll need to place the camera to the side of the artwork, so now photoshop comes into play

in photoshop use the crop tool and click on the perspective box
now you can crop to the corners of the trapizoid of your artwork and photoshop will turn it into a rectangle.
just be sure to check the proportions of width and height and use the “image size” with resample image on and constrain porportions off

March Meeting/News Information 2011

1. BUSINESS MEETING THIS SUNDAY

Our Annual Business Meeting will be held this Sunday, March 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center. Your attendance is very important at this meeting since we will be voting on a new slate of officers, and we cannot vote unless we have a quorum! So please make every effort to attend. If you absolutely cannot attend, you may e-mail me a proxy vote (several already have). We will also be having a short discussion about the direction of MCS, and when our business is over, Education Chair Nancy Staszak will give a short demo on gelatin printing.

2. GELATIN PRINTING DEMO

Several members volunteered at the March meeting to bring trays of gelatin for Nancy's demo. If you were one of those volunteers, please remember to prepare your tray the night before and bring it with you so that we have enough for everyone to get a quick chance to try a gelatin print. We could probably also use a few more volunteers. (If you need a recap on the recipe, let me know and I will send it.) And if you have them, Nancy has asked that you bring along these items: small rollers/brayers for spreading paint, papers you might like to print on, and thin objects like pressed flowers/leaves, feathers or cut out stencils.

3. DGPL EXHIBIT

Registration for the "Construction/Deconstruction" exhibit at Downers Grove Public Library is due by March 26. A pre-registration form was e-mailed to you last week, and I will have some hard copies available at Sunday's meeting. Drop off is Saturday, April 2, from 10-11 a.m. If you cannot drop your work off during that time period, please see if another member can help you.

4. NORRIS GALLERY EXHIBIT

Drop off for the "Elements" exhibit at the Norris Gallery in St. Charles will be Saturday, May 21, with hanging to follow that afternoon. Please make a note of that date on your calendar, as we will need a hanging crew again this year. More details, including registration info, will follow soon.

5. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

Our fiscal year begins on April 1, so membership renewals will be due by the April meeting. Forms will be available this Sunday, and will also be e-mailed to you shortly. We are again offering the choice of membership in MCS for $20 or dual membership in MCS and the National Collage Society for $55.

6. LOOKING FOWARD

We have more exciting programs planned for the spring! Mark your calendars for these meeting dates:

Collage Collective 2 exhibit at McCord Gallery
Six MCS members are having their second exhibit at McCord Gallery. Barb Arntzen, Mary Beth Miller Lies, Dianne Martia, Eve Ozer, Jim Pavlatos and Jeanne Sulik's work will be on display from March 5 thru April 2. Reception is Friday, March 11, from 6-8:30 p.m. McCord Gallery is at 9602 West Creek Road (just off LaGrange Road) in Palos Park, IL 60464 (708-671-0618). Gallery hours are M-F from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sat from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

National Art Premiere 2011 is on display at Elmhurst Artists' Guild Gallery through March 30. The gallery is inside the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill, Elmhurst, IL. The exhibit includes work by several MCS members, including Dianne Martia, Eve Ozer, and Dennis Salaty.

The AFA Best of the Best exhibit will be on display at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook from March 28 thru May 5. Reception and awards will be held Thursday, May 5 from 7-9 p.m. MCS members Tania Blanco, Barb Boland, Mary Ann Gradisher, Margi Hafer, Debbie Heemstra Novak, Eve Ozer and Laura Lein-Svencner will have work in this exhibit.

2011 Creative Chicago Expo at the Chicago Cultural Center on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Now in its 8th year, this highly successful, free, day-long event connects artists and art organizations in all disciplines (music, dance, theater, film, design, new media, fashion, publishing, visual art) with the businesses, information, services, and networks they need.

Maureen Gasek is an artist who works in several different media. She has a studio in Aurora and offers Art classes there, Maureen also have a extensive graphic arts background.

Edward Hart manages marketing for his wife Pamela Hart. Her large, realistic paintings are in local hospitals, libraries, doctor's offices and more.

Robin Rios Owner, Gallery director of 4Art inc. she was invited to bring her gallery and business to the Zhou Brother's Art Center over a year ago in down town Chicago.
The Panel Discussion will last until about 3:30, with more time for individual questions and mingling with our guests.

1. MCS December meeting

We will hold our annual "Eat, Gab and Grab" meeting on Sunday, December 5, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien. Activities will include:

a. Holiday Potluck - Bring food to share with the group (appetizers, light entree, desserts all welcome). Please e-mail Sylvia Koch at SMK62@comcast.net to let her know what you are planning to bring so she can coordinate.
b. Vote on Bylaws Change - We must have a quorum in order to vote on the bylaws changes, so attendance at this meeting is especially encouraged.
c. Discussing the future - We will also discuss upcoming programs and possibilities for MCS.
d. Grab bag - Bring a small gift that you have made for the exchange. This could be a small piece of artwork or other item that would be enjoyed by your fellow artists.

2. MCS January meeting

1. Just a reminder that there will NOT be a general meeting during November due to the MCS retreat taking place October 28-31.

2. Our December "Eat, Gab & Grab" meeting will be Sunday, December 5, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center. This meeting traditionally includes a potluck lunch, discussion about our direction and future events, and a grab bag featuring small pieces of art.

3. We are working toward a January meeting in 2011 (even though we normally don't have a meeting in January). So put Sunday, January 9, 2011, on your calendar now! This is the second Sunday of the month. We are working on what we hope will be a wonderful presentation to get us all focused for a new year of creativity and success.

The October MCS meeting will be held Sunday, October 3, from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien.

Margi Hafer will be presenting a demo and mini-workshop on watercolor techniques for collage. This is a hands-on afternoon, and our standard $5 studio fee applies. As always, feel free to bring treats to share and items you no longer need for our informal swap table.

SUPPLY LIST

Please bring the following items:

- A white plate or palette (enamel butcher tray, porcelain or plastic plate are fine if you don't have a palette)
- A container for water
- A 16"x20" board to stretch paper (gator board, masonite, plywood, or foam core will work for small pieces)- A spray bottle
- Watercolor brushes (flat and round of various sizes)
- Paper towels
- A large sponge for clean-up
- Assorted collage elements of your choice (i.e. photos, magazine pictures, various papers, stamps, etc.)
- Various glues you like to use
- Scissors
- Optional: small clay board to mount finished watercolor

The following items will be supplied: watercolor paper, fiber papers, watercolor paint, matte medium, kosher salt, plastic wrap, and other supplies to alter and texture watercolor paints.Participants will create two small watercolor pieces based on demonstrated techniques.

Open Studio at Nancy's Home

MCS member Nancy S. held an open studio Sunday, September 12, with a hands-on demo of relief and intaglio printing. Each attendee had the opportunity to emboss or carve a small, simple printing plate, and run it through Nancy's printing press.

We inked the plates with a brayer and used dry paper for relief printing. Then we cleaned the plates, forced ink into the carved portion, wiped off the surface and used damp paper to create intalio prints. The press is manually operated, and each of us were able to make several prints.

Below, Sylvia has just pulled an intaglio print, and there are three other plates that have been run through the press and are waiting to be pulled.

Mary is pleasantly suprised by the appearance of her print.

Here are all the prints that were created Sunday afternoon.

And when we were done printmaking, we enjoyed lemonade, goodies, friendship and the wonderful fall weather in Nancy's delightful back yard, where even her woodpile is artistic! Eve Ozer has been juried into the Somnambulist Show at the ZhouB Art Center, 1029 W. 35th Street, Chicago. Show runs September 17-October 15, with an opening reception on Friday, September 17, from 7-10 p.m. and a closing reception Friday, September 15, from 7-10 p.m. The opening reception will feature Chef Mario Santiago of May St. Cafe.

Eve Ozer will have a solo show at the Downers Grove Public Library during the month of October.

Cystal Neubauer, MCS member and Vendor at the Cloth Paper Scissor Create Artiss Faire..

MCS member Crystal Neubauer is participating as a vendor in the Cloth Paper Scissors Create Retreat's Artists' Faire this Friday night, August 27, from 6-9pm at the Rosemont Hotel near O'Hare Airport. She has a booth offering artwork and found objects. This Artists' Faire is open to the public with free admission. Crystal says she believes there are some open booths if you want to consider vending there Friday. Check the same web site for information.

Crystal will also be teaching 3 classes in Portland at the Art & Soul retreat on October 5th & 6th and then vending at the vendor night there on October 9th!

There will be no formal general meeting the month of September, but there are several field trip opportunities for MCS members:

1. The weekend of September 3-5, Laura Lein-Svencner is hosting a studio exhibit of her work along with artists Doris Lein and Nancy Cole . Location is 6718 Dale Road, Darien IL. and hours are 10-4 each day with demo's 1-3pm.

2. MCS member Connie Nestler and her husband Steven are exhibiting their abstract paintings and photographs in their 2-person exhibition "Nature and Nurture" at Elmhurst Artists' Guild Gallery, located in the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126. The reception will be held Friday, September 3, from 7 to 9 pm, and all MCS members are invited.

3. MCS member Pat Pope has a solo show at the DuPage Art League, 218 W. Front Street, Wheaton. All members are invited to the reception, Friday, September 10, from 7 to 9 pm.

4. On Sunday, September 12, at least one MCS member will open her home studio for members to visit and learn about a specific art technique. Details will follow via e-mail prior to that date, so watch your in-boxes!

5. The October Meeting will be held Sunday, October 3, and will feature Margi Hafer teaching us about watercolor techniques that can be incorporated into collage. The afternoon will involve hands-on learning, and more information (including a supply list) will be published soon.

August's meeting will be on the SECOND Sunday of the month, August 8. We have reserved the space at the Darien Municipal Center from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will have TWO presentations as well as some work time.

Our theme for the day is "Paper, Paper, Paper." Beginning at 10:00 a.m., we wil enjoy an informal presentation by Susan Clark of Graphic Chemical and Ink on their vast selection of Asian papers. This is a local company with a wide variety of art papers and other supplies. Susan will also take our questions and provide time to browse their paper selection. Then from 1:00-2:30 p.m., Andrea Harris, artist representative for Strathmore Artists Paper will present, "The Essentials of Paper," a hands-on presentation including the history of paper, how paper is made, and different types of art paper. Samples will be provided as well as a chance to try out many of the Strathmore papers. In between presentations, we will have time to work on our own projects, chat and eat, and take a look at each other's work. You may come for all or part of the day. Our normal $5 studio fee applies.

We may also have a special artist guest who would love to see our collage, assemblage and mixed-media artwork. We can't tell you who this artist is, but if she is able to attend, it will be a great honor to us and you will be happy to have had the opportunity to show your work to her!

Bring the following: Projects in progress that you want to work on (remember time and space will be somewhat limited), recent completed work to show each other and our special artist guest, a lunch and beverage, snacks to share, note-taking materials, items for the monthly swap table.

The morning hours of this meeting will be from 9:30am till about 12:30 with a break and clean up of more projects that all the members have decided to bring and work on.. We do these kind of Workday session with our members to offer oportunities to share and grow in our collage mediums. After the lunch break members are invited to be part of our Afternoon demonstrations and lectures with this months Artist Andrea Harris. Andrea Harris, Artist Representative for Strathmore Artists Paper™, will present “The Essentials of Paper”, a 90-minute hands-on presentation on Strathmore Fine Art Drawing and Watercolor Papers. The presentation will focus on how understanding a paper’s fiber, weight, texture, surface, grade and permanency affect an artist’s choice and usage of fine art paper. Attendees will participate in hands-on exercises, using the various papers with a wide selection of drawing materials.

The goal of the presentation is to provide information to help artists select the right paper for their medium and technique.

The presentation will cover all aspects of fine art drawing papers including:
• History of Writing Surfaces: parchment to papyrus to paper
• History of Paper: from China to Europe
• How Paper is Made: past and present

About the Presenter

Andrea Harris was educated at the School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC). Her artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States. Andrea's artwork can be found in private collections throughout the United States & Europe, including a recent acquisition by the Illinois Institute of Art. Andrea is one of 120 artists awarded participation in the “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet” public art exhibition in Chicago and Washington. DC, and her replica “Cool Globe” has been featured at the United Nations & Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The Midwest Collage Society will exhibit 113 original collage, mixed media and assemblage works, by 33 artists, at the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center. The theme of the show, Paper, Process and Perception, encompasses each individual artists' perception of the world through paper, wood, fabrics and other canvases

Mixed media collage has moved beyond the era of cut and paste and is now considered one of the most exciting fields of fine art. Today's mixed media collage artists push the boundaries of this fine art form, using anything and everything to create fascinating textures and illusions. Adding objects, handmade papers, image transfers and layers of paint, they create original works of art.

The quintessential recyclers, many artists find a treasure of inspiration in rescued items headed for the landfill. They re-purpose, they re-create, they re-new what was not wanted into desired artwork.

The art of creative expression makes this exhibit intriguing and exciting to see. Each piece will have a process description next to it, so the viewer can see what elements and techniques were used to create the work. Visitors to the exhibit will come away with a fresh perspective of collage , mixed media and assemblage.

For those who have work in the "References" exhibit at Downers Grove Public Library, don’t forget that you must pick it up tomorrow, Saturday, May 1, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. If you cannot pick up your work then, you must make arrangements for someone else to pick it up during those hours.
2. MCS General Meeting, Sunday, May 2
Our May meeting is this Sunday, May 2, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien. Studio fee is $5. The meeting will feature a mini-workshop by Anne Sherwin and Leslie Trebotich of 3Amis Designs, Inc. Anne and Leslie will share their unique method of paper folding to create two-dimensional pictures. Sunday’s hands-on session will feature a Christmas design. Listed below are the supplies to bring:
Three sheets of 8.5 x 11" paper that coordinate (patterned, solid or both), Exacto knife, small scissors (for detail cutting), Scotch tape (1/2" wide), 12" ruler, bone folder, embossing tool or stylus, self-healing cutting mat, 12" paper cutter (if you have one).
3Amis Designs will bring 4 paper cutters, 4 cutting mats, Christmas papers (available for sale), cardstock for base, final sealing material for artwork.
3. Best of the Best Awards and Reception
The AFA Best of the Best exhibit closing reception is Friday, May 7, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Mayslake Peabody Mansion. Awards are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. If you have work in that show, remember that you must pick up your art at the end of the reception.
4. Upcoming exhibit at the Norris Gallery in St. Charles
Our next group exhibit is coming up soon! Registration materials were e-mailed to all members several weeks ago. If you misplaced them, please let me know and I will re-send them to you. Pre-registration deadline is Friday, May 21, drop-off date is Saturday, June 6, and the reception date is Friday, July 16. Because the Norris drop off and hanging is taking place the first weekend in June, we have moved our general meeting to the second Sunday, June 13. Dennis Salaty and Dianne Martia have works in the Chicago Art Open at River East Art Center, 435 East Illinois in Chicago, through May 7 and the Best of the Best at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook through May 7. Dennis exhibited in Image Attitude Impression at Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, which closed on April 9. Dianne is currently exhibiting at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington through July 11.

Some clarification:
the tape to bring would be scotch tape;
a stylus is just fine for the embossing tool;
we'll be cutting 11" long paper so rulers and possible paper cutters should take 12 inches.

what a great time though tight for space we did it we all made a Coptic Stitch book... We are a pretty amazing group to be able to do that in the short amount of time and space.

Ann Hupke Member of the Midwest Collage Society will be our presenter for the Month of March she will be giving a mini workshop on Coptic stitching/book binding. Please note the supplies you will need to bring and the studio fee of 5.00 is also needed.

History of the Coptic Stitch.

In the second or third century AD, the Copts, early Christians living in Egypt, developed the Coptic binding. They folded a few sheets of papyrus together into sections. Then, adapting their technique of interlacing threads in carpet making and weaving, they used a chain stitch to bind the sections between wooden covers. Once parchment became available, it quickly replaced papyrus
for the pages. This binding technique was used throughout the Islamic world and Eastern Christen-dom (Europe), and is still used in Ethiopia today. By the fall of Rome, in 476AD, parchment had
largely replaced papyrus except in Egypt.

We will make a small “Coptic Stitch Book”…….41/2”Wx6”H

I will print out directions.
I will bring Wax thread and needles.
I will pre-cut Book boards (front and back).
I will also pre-cut some pages ( these will be the signatures of our books-and will save time.)
I will also bring the Cradles which we will share.

What members can bring:

PVA –Glue and brush
About 3 sheets of 81/2’ x 11” of decorated paper for covers. ( Not watercolor paper because it cracks
when it is bent around the edges of the book board.)

1. The next Midwest Collage Society Meeting is Sunday, February 7, at the Darien Municipal Center, 1710 Plainfield Road, Darien. From 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., we will have general studio time to work on new or existing projects. The rest of the afternoon, from 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m, will feature a demonstration of Bookbinding and More by Lauren Shover and Angela Ventrella. They will provide all materials for the demo, although you may bring along some of your favorite papers, ribbons and stamps to use if you wish. Bringing your own tools (scissors, bone folder, bookbinding needle/thread) if you have them may be helfpul. Fee is $5.

2. In the near future, each MCS member will be contacted by one of the members of the nominating committee to discuss the upcoming elections. We are seeking to fill several vacancies on the board, including the president's position. We also want to remind you that each member is expected to serve on one of the committees (exhibits/portfolio/online gallery, education, communication, membership), so be thinking about where your talents can fit.

3. Membership renewals are due by the April 5 meeting. Renewal forms will be available at February's meeting and will also be e-mailed to you. Remember to submit your 4x7" collages to Ann Hupke for the chance of winning a year's membership!

4. Because we only have one other group exhibit planned for 2010 so far, the Board has decided that we will have the current "Memory" exhibit judged. Awards will be announced at the closing reception on March 6.

5. If you received an award at the Bloomingdale exhibit last summer, you are eligible to show that artwork in the upcoming Best of the Best exhibit sponsored by the AFA, which begins in March.

The photo's present were taken this past week before the Exhibit Opening, Saturday Jan 16th, 4-6pm. Mayslake Peabody Estate if you decide to visit the exhibit during the hours that the Estate is open you will see all the works of the members from the Midwest Collage Society.

The Midwest Collage Society started in 2003 from a collage class taken at LaGrange Art League and a few devoted students and interested members.

Members meeting on the first Sunday of the month. Demonstration from our own members to visiting artist's are invited to share their process. Members work and plan exhibit opportunities to educate the public on the the fine art of collage.

Collage is an fine art starting over 1000 years ago but only since Picasso and George Braque has it taken such importance among the art world. In 2012 the Fine Art of Collage will be 100 years old.

Our members come from all over the midwest, and many back grounds sharing the common interest in collage.

The Midwest Collage Society is group with about 50 members.

Our membership dues are 20.00 per year and we collect a small collection from each member that attend the meetings of 5.00 when present.

Our next Exhibit will be in an Annual April 2010 at the Downers Grove Public Library. We like to celebrate Earth Day and awareness of recycling, reusing and repurpose with our art exhibt.

The Mayslake Peabody Estate is a wonderful place to visit and learn about it's past, many events are held there and the grounds during the warmer months are a delight to explore too.

Eligibility

Work, when mounted for gallery presentation, must hang on the wall and may
be no longer 20" on its longest side. All entries must have been completed
after 2008. We encourage submission of work that is for sale. Each piece
must be assembled and ready for hanging, no glass, Plexiglass only, no
gallery clips, no saw-tooth hangers.

About the Venue

The ALL(Arts League of Lowell) Arts Gallery

In a city whose motto is "Art is the handmaid of human good" the Arts League
of Lowell has become the catalyst for the creation of a community of all
artists. Through ALL, longtime residents and Lowell's new cultural
immigrants can come together to share ideas and resources, and to promote
each others' work.

ALL was conceived in the Fall of 2003 and held its first monthly meeting in
January of 2004. With the help of its members, sponsors, and patrons, ALL
fosters and celebrates creativity and artistic expression in Lowell and the

Bring your supplies and whatever art project you are working for a fun filled day of Creating together with your collage friends.
Our program will start around 1:00 or 1:30, depending how long it takes them to set up. Lauren Shover and Angela Ventrella will present a workshop on bookmaking.
They have conducted a very popular workshop for the Illinois Art Educators Association in the past. Angela showed us how to do paper marbling and construction of a simple book in October 2008. Lauren has a collection of beautiful handmade books and papers which she will show and share with us.

Workshop Description:

The Intuitive Process of Collage
The art form of collage is an intuitive process of concealing and revealing, adding and subtracting until you reach a desired image. Students will learn the fundamentals of collage, design skills and the opportunity for new spontaneity as they explore exciting collage techniques. We will cover the proper techniques, adhesives and materials for the fine art of collage. Both those new to collage and people with previous experience will benefit from this workshop as it is designed to engage any level of interest. Each participant is ensured to come away inspired. Day one will be about creating individual unique collage papers, coating them with polymer medium to prepare for the tack iron process. Day two consists of exercises in compositional layouts; images transfer techniques and exploring the intuitive process of creativity in their collage artwork. Please note the collage workshop is set up on two separate Saturdays to give working individuals the opportunity to participate in this Collage workshop.

Collage Instructor: Laura Lein-Svencner- Award winning National Artist, Teacher and Demonstrator, member of the National Collage Society, LaGrange Art League, Naperville Art League, co founder of the Midwest Collage Society.

Hi Ladies,

I couldn't help but need to know what to bring for the collage retreat. How about you?

I will bring my pc140 copier with some hp papers so if we need to make copies we have that till the toner goes out and then I'll put a donation bowl out.
I'll bring my usual supplies
I do have a CD player and CD's I'll bring that.

Bring a blanket to lay on and then a sheet or a sleeping bag as the beds are not soft. I think I'll bring a few top sheets so I can tuck them in and be save for size all the way around. Make sure you bring a pillow too.

Extension cords but there are a lot of outlets Pat said.

I'll bring my hair dryer and tack irons plus my extension cords. but if you use the tack iron technique you may want to bring your own too.

there are alot of tables there so we are set.

It's not camping out but it's not the hotel scene so we have to make it what we want... but the food is plentiful and good. I hear.

No smoking in the buildings please be respectful..

Tin Ladies - this Sunday's project!

Here's some extensive "info" on the tin ladies that I had written up a couple months ago for a whole day workshop. I know we're only going to have a couple of hours, but that should be sufficient time to get your tin lady basically constructed. DO NOT WORRY if you don't have or can't get supplies together. I have plenty of tin cans opened and ready to cut and extra pliers and supplies to share.
This will be fun!!!

I'm repeating here FOR EMPHASIS - the following info was for a full day workshop. For the MCS meeting it's meant as an informative guideline. Don't think yo have to collect all this stuff!

Tin Ladies

I’ve titled this project “Tin Ladies” because the basic parts of the doll body are made from tin cans. Really, the bodies can be made from any number of materials such as cardboard, matboard, fabric, wood, but they do take on an interesting look using the tin, particularly when wire, grommets (eyelets), brads, beads and buttons are added.

So the main ingredient is TIN (or like I mentioned, any other material you want to cut into a body shape(s). I’ve found that most cookie and gift tins are quite heavy to work with, but the light weight metals from drink cans seem to work very well. The Arizona Tea cans are very colorful; cola cans work well; I’m sure there are plenty more out there.

You’ll need to cut the tins open. Hubby has been cutting them open for me by sawing off the top and bottom and then laying the piece flat. If you yourself or a companion can do this, great. Otherwise I myself have punctured the (empty) tin and then cut it open with a heavy duty scissors or tin snips. BUT BE CAREFUL, the cut tin can be very sharp. Someone cutting herself is what worries the most with this project. Hubby says we should be wearing gloves when doing this. I haven’t, though!

Besides the TIN PIECES and heavy duty SCISSORS or TIN SNIPS, you’ll want to have some JEWELRY PLIERS and maybe just a plain old pliers. It would be good to have a round nose pliers and a flat head pliers and a wire cutter. Don’t feel you have to go buy these; I have some you could borrow or share. Also bring some WIRE. You’d probably make the most use of 20, 22, or 24 gauge wire for most of the work. If you’re going to make jump rings, something heavier like 16 or 18 gauge would be better for those.

After those items, there’a s million things you could use to put your doll together and to dress / embellish it. I myself have and will bring ½ million of these things and you’ll be welcome to use them.
Here are a few of the million things you could collect to bring:
Jump rings – various sizes (I can show you how to make them)
Grommets (small ones) and setter (These are also called eyelets. I have some you could use.)
Neat old jewelry pieces and chains
Charms and beads – various sizes (longer shaped beads work well for arms and legs).
Buttons, possibly pipe cleaners or telephone wire, thread or string
Fibers for hair or whatever
Hole punches
Small hammer
Geometric shaped pieces (such as poker chips, scrabble or game pieces) that can be used for heads or body parts.

 eyelets and eyelet setter (used to be known as grommets)
 1/8 inch or 1/16 inch hole punches

members attend, as we will be approving the schedule and details of the Exhibit committee.

The opening reception is this Friday evening, July 10, at the Chicago Cultural Center. Wine & cheese and other refreshments will be served from 5:00 to 7:30 PM. Planet Collage.com is proud to announce it second group show entitled“Post X” July 1, 2009 through July 31, 2009 - - Planet Collage.com will be exhibiting in the art gallery within the Lagrange Park Library (Illinois) located on the second floor during the month of July! This group show of members of planetcollage.com includes individual art by select members, exchanged collage postcards along with exchanged candy tins. Plantcollage.com is an international online fine art collage group whose members are from all over the globe. This show will represent select member artists who reside in the surrounding suburbs* of Chicago and as far away as Pennsylvania, Spain, California and Washington State. Along with small artworks created by planetcollage.com members, this exhibit includes a collection of postcards and tins received by curator and founder of planetcollage.com, LuEllen Joy Giera of LaGrange Park, IL. The international postcard exchange began in April 2006.
